The Riviera's reputation is marinas and money, but the actual charter day happens at anchor. Between Monaco and St Tropez hides a chain of anchorages that explain why the world's yachts spend their summers here, and knowing them is the difference between a day on the water and a day in a queue.
The Lerins islands: Cannes' secret garden
Fifteen minutes off the Croisette, the channel between Sainte Marguerite and Saint Honorat is flat, pine scented and turquoise. Morning swims here before the day boats arrive are the Riviera at its absolute best, and lunch at the island restaurants is a set piece. This is the default first stop out of Cannes and it never misses.
Villefranche and the Cap Ferrat coast
East of Nice, the bay of Villefranche is deep, protected and ringed by the most expensive real estate in Europe. Anchor under Cap Ferrat, swim, and take the slow cruise past the villas toward Monaco at golden hour. It is the postcard run, and it works in almost any weather.
Pampelonne: the scene, on your terms
The famous beach clubs of St Tropez face an open anchorage. Anchoring off and tendering in for lunch is how the Riviera has done it for seventy years: you get the scene without the roped sunbed economics, and the swim off the stern afterwards beats the shore break. In August the anchorage is its own city; your captain knows where in it to sit.
The Esterel: the coast nobody photographs
Between Cannes and St Raphael the red volcanic Esterel drops straight into blue water, with calanques like Figueirette and Agay offering quiet swims twenty minutes from the show. When the marquee spots are heaving, this coast is the professional's answer.
The practical frame
