There is one place in the Mediterranean where black mountains fall a kilometre straight into flat, dark, mirror calm water, with a medieval walled town at the bottom of the cliff. It is three hours from Dubrovnik, it costs a fraction of the Riviera, and most charter guests still have not heard of it.
The Bay of Kotor
Technically a drowned river canyon, practically Europe's southernmost fjord. The inner bay narrows at Verige to a few hundred metres, opens again at Perast with its two island churches, and dead ends under Kotor's Venetian walls, a UNESCO town best arrived at by water. The bay is protected in almost all weather, which makes it superb for relaxed days, first charters and swimming kids.
Outside the bay
Round the corner, the open coast runs past Budva's old town toward Sveti Stefan, the fortified island village that became the country's postcard. The water is Adriatic clear, the beaches are long, and the anchorage off Sveti Stefan at golden hour is one of those views you stop narrating and just look at.
Why the money goes further here
Montenegro is building its yachting economy deliberately: modern marinas at Tivat and Lustica, easy formalities, and rates that undercut the western Med for equivalent boats.
