Chartering with kids: the brief that changes everything

A dad messaged us once: two kids under six, a grandmother nervous about boats, one dream day. That brief produces a completely different shortlist from the same budget without kids, and knowing why will save your family day.

What actually matters with kids aboard

  • Shade. The single most underrated spec on a boat. A hardtop or a real awning turns 2pm from a problem into a nap.
  • A stable hull. Beamier boats and catamaran style platforms roll less at anchor, which is what seasickness actually is for most kids, and most grandmothers.
  • Water access. A big swim platform with a ladder the little ones can climb themselves. Toys matter less than the platform; the sea is the toy.
  • A crew that likes children. Crews self select fast; some genuinely love family days and it shows in the first ten minutes. We know which ones. Life jackets in kids' sizes are arranged in the booking, just tell us ages.

The itinerary changes too

Short runs, long anchorages: twenty to forty minute hops, then hours in a calm bay. Morning departures beat afternoon ones; kids are at their best early and the sea usually is too. Build the day around one great swimming stop rather than three famous ones, and put the lunch ashore somewhere with space to run. The general version of this logic is in itineraries that work.

Where family days are easiest

Protected water is the family cheat code: Mallorca's southern bays, the Saronic islands out of Athens, and the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro, which is effectively a lake with mountains. Malta's Blue Lagoon works beautifully early in the day before the crowds, as covered in the Comino guide.

Say the ages in the first message

Capacity law counts children as guests regardless of age, and Italian day charter rules cap guests at twelve however small two of them are. More usefully, the ages let us match the boat, the crew and the route in one pass. "Family day, kids 4 and 7, one nervous grandmother, calm water please" is a perfect brief; we will take it from there.

Tell us the date and the number of guests

We come back the same day in season with what is actually free, the all in number and the terms. Save the number and use it for any destination after this one.
