Almost every enquiry asks for a full day, because almost nobody knows the other formats exist. Where operators offer them, half days and sunset slots are the cheapest legitimate way onto a crewed yacht, and for some plans they are simply the better product.
The formats
- The half day: commonly four hours, morning or afternoon. One great anchorage instead of three, which, as the itinerary guide argues, is most of the value anyway.
- The sunset slot: two to three golden hour hours, the highest scenery per euro in chartering. The full playbook is in the Malta sunset guide.
- The overnight and the mini week: in the other direction, two or three day charters exist on many crewed boats outside peak weeks; the first taste of living aboard without committing a full week.
The honest economics
A half day is never half price; figure well above that, because the boat's fixed costs, crew, cleaning, fuel to the anchorage, do not halve. It is still meaningfully below the full day rate, and on the right plan, a morning swim before an afternoon flight, a sunset birthday, a first date with the sea, it is the right sized purchase, not a compromise.
Where they exist, and where they do not
Availability is the operator's call and it tightens with the season. In July and August many boats only sell full days on Saturdays but will happily run a sunset slot midweek; in June and September the calendars soften everywhere. Areas with dense day fleets, Malta, Athens, Marbella, offer the most short format room. We only quote formats a boat actually runs, rates verbatim from the operator.
When to choose short
Choose the half day when the trip's calendar is already full, when it is a toe in the water for a bigger charter later, or when the budget conversation in the group is getting quiet. Choose the sunset slot when the point is a moment, not a day. And if you catch yourself extending the half day request hour by hour in the chat, just book the day; everyone who does says the same thing at six o'clock, which is that they wished they had.
