Turkey sits at the eastern end of the same sea as Ibiza and Saint Tropez, has better water than most of it, and turns up in roughly none of the charter shortlists people send us. That is a pricing error, and it is worth understanding before it corrects.
Three coasts, not one country
"Turkey" on a charter map means three different holidays, and choosing between them is most of the planning.
- Bodrum is the social one. A peninsula of bays, beach clubs and a working marina town, with day boats leaving all summer for Kaıklıdere, Ortakent and the islands opposite. Closest in feel to Mykonos, at a fraction of the number.
- Göcek and the Gulf of Fethiye is the quiet one, and it is the reason charter people talk about Turkey at all: a sheltered gulf of a dozen islands and pine-backed bays, calm enough that a week aboard never needs open water. This is where the gulet weeks run.
- Antalya is the eastern end — big marinas, warm water into October, ancient coastline, and the deepest concentration of day boats we hold in the country.
What a gulet actually is
The wooden ketch you have seen in every Turkish charter photo is a gulet: a broad, shallow, motor-sailing hull built for comfortable island hopping rather than speed. It carries a crew, sleeps its guests in cabins below and lives on deck. It is not a motor yacht and does not behave like one, and that is the point — a gulet week is a slow week. Groups who want tenders, toys and 25 knots between bays should read the crewed charter piece and book a motor yacht instead; both exist in the same waters.
Why the money goes further
Turkey prices in lira against a euro-denominated market, runs a longer season than the western Med, and does not carry the berth costs of Porto Cervo or Antibes. The practical result is that a group's budget buys a noticeably larger boat than the same budget buys in the Balearics or on the Riviera. Season, and the part people get wrong
The Turkish season runs longer at both ends than the western Mediterranean — May and October are genuinely warm on this coast, not a gamble. High summer in the Gulf of Fethiye is hot and still; Bodrum gets the meltemi, the same northerly that blows through the Cyclades, which is a gift on a sailing week and a nuisance on a small day boat in the afternoon. Practicalities worth knowing before you ask
- Getting there. Bodrum, Dalaman (for Göcek and Fethiye) and Antalya all take direct flights from most of Europe in season. Nobody needs to route through Istanbul.
- Paperwork. Crewed charters in Turkish waters are run by the operator, including the transit log; guests need passports and nothing else. Check your own visa position before booking flights.
- Cross-border. Hopping to a Greek island for lunch sounds obvious on a map and is a formal border crossing with clearance either side. It can be arranged on a week, it is not a spontaneous afternoon, and it has to be agreed before departure.
- VAT. Turkey is outside the EU, so the EU charter VAT rules that apply in Italy, France, Spain, Greece and Croatia do not apply here. Turkish charter tax works differently and it is on the quote you get. The EU picture is in the VAT explainer.
